cowbellz's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- whales are HUGE, yo. my parents left today, heading out on the "hall of fame tour" on their way back to houston. they're hitting the baseball, football, and rock and roll halls of fame. we celebrated my birthday a month early yesterday because they won't be around for my real one. (start shopping now, folks. it's coming up, august 14th) for the better part of the day, we went whale watching, which was AMAZING. this is something i have wanted to do since i was 12, when i first realized that i wanted to be a marine biologist. unfortunately, the marine biologist thing didn't last past freshman year of college when i discovered that i would have to actually be a scientist. but the interest in it never waned. we saw some HUGE whales. this one fin whale surfaced right by our boat. and when i say right by, i mean almost underneath. it scared the crap out of me. this whale was almost as big as our boat. it was the most amazing thing i've ever seen. it was GIGANTIC and extremely graceful at the same time. i could have spent days out there watching them feed. did you know whales left "footprints"? you can tell where a whale just was by looking at the water. the way it's tail moves leaves a large round area of swirling water that looks much different than the water surrounding it. and it lasts for a long time after the whale dives down. just a little whale fun fact for ya. after the boat trip, we went to a restaurant for a lobster dinner. i wore a bib and everything. and my dad cracked a claw and spewed water all over the blue haired lady at the booth behind us. once again, my family was the giggly table at the fancy restaurant. someday i want to live by an ocean again. 9:50 am - 08 july 2002 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
